Weekend Wrinkle: Why Spock?

Mr. Spock

Leonard Nimoy died last week. Mr. Nimoy portrayed what I can only call one of the most iconic characters of the late 20th century – Mr. Spock.

Mr. Nimoy brought visionary Gene Roddenberry’s half human, half alien, logic obsessed, emotion repressed character to vibrant life. Spock was always my favorite character in all the Star Trek series.

As a young girl introduced to the original Star Trek (in reruns!), you would think I would go for the flashier, sexier Captain Kirk. No, it was Spock who intrigued me.

There was a mystery about him and his internal struggles that was irresistible. Even when the character grew older and seemed to come to terms with himself, I still liked him best.

Why? What is it about that character that made him so interesting? What other great characters do you love and why?
